What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical Peels are one of the oldest ways to rejuvenate your skin and give you a more youthful appearance and a popular spa treatment. They’re often used by dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons and for microdermabrasion and can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and even scars.

There are several varieties of  chemical peels, with TCA Peels and Glycolic  being the most popular and effective types of treatments. A chemical peel can be a serious procedure and is recommended for correcting major flaws and skin imperfections. The procedure does exactly what its name describes, exfoliating the top layer of cells.

Types of Chemical Peels

Salicylic Acid Peel – Acne Treatment

Salicylic acid is a mild acid acne treatment available in over-the-counter products only at a concentration of 2%.  It works as a keratolytic agent, which means, it encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells. When performed by professionals the concentration of the acid is higher, making it a more effective, yet still very safe treatment not only for mild acne, but also for oily or sun-damaged skin and post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation (extra pigment that can leave your skin darker in certain areas).

Glycolic Acid Peel

This is a another type of chemical peel, but less aggressive.  It works similarly to clear pores in acne prone patients and has been referred to as a “lunch time” peel since the downtime afterwards is quite minimal.

Trichloroacetic Acid  or TCA Peel

Trichloroacetic Acid is one of the deeper, more aggressive chemical treatments used to correct significant skin flaws. Benefits to the skin are numerous, among them – tightening and firming facial skin leaving you with a younger more attractive complexion is just the starting point.

After TCA facial peels are completed, the reproduction of collagen is also increased immensely – continuing to build a more beautiful complexion for any patient.  The new surface of the skin becomes clear and smooth.

Jessner Peel

The Jessner Peel is a solution consisting of 14% lactic acid and 14% salicylic acid (AHA) peeling agent with a resorcinol solvent. This is a strong chemical peel that is known for delivering great results. A Jessner peel achieves a more thorough peel than a Glycolic Acid peel also known as AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) peel. Besides being an excellent facial treatment, a Jessner peel can be used to lighten areas of hyperpigmentation and to treat acne, acne-scarred, photo damaged and aging skin.

Enzyme Peel

An enzyme peel helps to accelerate the natural exfoliative process of the skin by dissolving dirt and oil that reside on its surface. The enzymes generally come from natural sources such as fruits and vegetables and the peels come in mask form. When choosing an enzyme peel, it is important to find one that does not irritate your skin, as some peels can cause reactions in certain people.
